Free MQTT brokers

Public MQTT brokers you can connect to right now — with hosts and ports — plus free open-source brokers you can run yourself. Every broker with a secure WebSocket listener can be tested directly in your browser.

Free public MQTT test brokers

Open to everyone, no sign-up. Great for learning and quick checks — never for real data.

Ports at a glance

Browsers can only use the WebSocket ports. Not sure which one you need? Read MQTT ports explained.

Free open-source brokers to self-host

Prefer to run your own? These brokers are free to install — you take care of servers, TLS, updates and backups.

Eclipse Mosquitto

The lightweight classic. Ideal for a single server, Raspberry Pi or home lab.

EMQX

Clustered broker with a rule engine for data integration. Check the licence of the version you deploy.

HiveMQ Community Edition

Open-source Java broker with an extension SDK. Clustering is part of the commercial Enterprise edition.

NanoMQ

Small-footprint broker built for edge gateways and constrained hardware.

VerneMQ

Apache-licensed broker with clustering, built on Erlang/OTP.

Not sure which one fits? Compare MQTT brokers side by side or generate a config with the mosquitto.conf generator.

From the makers of TestMQTT

Need a broker only you can use?

Public test brokers are shared with thousands of strangers. ConnectMQ gives you a private MQTT broker you can trust with real devices — set up in minutes.

  • Your own isolated broker — nobody else can read your topics
  • Username / password auth and per-topic access control
  • TLS and secure WebSockets, MQTT 3.1.1 and MQTT 5
  • Same client code from first test to production

Free MQTT broker FAQ

Is there a free MQTT broker?

Yes. You can connect to free public test brokers such as broker.connectmq.com, broker.hivemq.com, broker.emqx.io and test.mosquitto.org without an account, or install a free open-source broker such as Mosquitto on your own server.

Which free MQTT broker should I use for testing?

Any public broker on this page works for quick tests. Run the speed test on the TestMQTT home page to see which one responds fastest from your location, and use a unique topic prefix so you only see your own messages.

Are free public MQTT brokers safe?

They are fine for experiments, but anyone can subscribe to your topics and there is no authentication or uptime guarantee. Never send credentials or personal data through a public broker.

Can I use a free MQTT broker in production?

Not a public one. Production devices need a private broker with authentication, access control and TLS — either one you operate yourself or a managed broker such as ConnectMQ.
